The Los Angeles Department of Water & Power (LADWP) is committed to promoting sustainable transportation through its “Charge Up LA! Residential” program. This initiative aims to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) by providing rebates for home charging stations. As of Summer 2024, the program has expanded to include J3400 connection and plug-in charger installations, offering even more options for EV owners.

Rebate Options

The program offers two main rebate options: Standard Level 2 Charger and Low-Income Qualified Level 2 Charger. Both options provide significant financial incentives for installing home charging stations.

1. Standard Level 2 Charger Rebate

Rebate Type Prescriptive
Rebate Amount Lesser of $1,000 per Charger OR 100% of Project Cost

This rebate applies to wall-mounted charging stations with either a SEA J1772 or Tesla plug. Key features include:

  • Special Time-of-Use (TOU) rate code available
  • Potential additional $250 rebate for TOU EV Meter installation
  • DMV registration copy required
  • Charger must be from the program’s approved list

2. Low-Income Qualified Level 2 Charger Rebate

Rebate Type Prescriptive
Rebate Amount Lesser of $1,500 per Charger OR 100% of Project Cost

This enhanced rebate is designed for customers participating in LADWP’s Lifeline or EZ-SAVE Customer Assistance Programs. Additional requirements include:

  • Installation must be in a program-defined low-income area or disadvantaged community
  • All other requirements from the standard rebate apply (TOU rate code, potential additional rebate, DMV registration, approved charger list)

J3400 Connection and Plug-in Charger Installations

As of Summer 2024, the program has expanded to include J3400 connection and plug-in charger installations. This expansion offers several benefits:

  • Increased compatibility with a wider range of electric vehicles
  • Future-proofing home charging infrastructure
  • Potential for faster charging speeds, depending on the specific charger model
