October 8, 2024 The rebate program is now open.
October 2, 2024 The ZESBI application period has been extended and will reopen for applications on 10/8/24. There will no longer be a maximum vehicle cap, so eligible applicants will be able to apply for over 50 ZE school buses and their supporting infrastructure.
October 1, 2024 The rebate program is now closed.

Level 2 Charger

Rebate Amount Lesser of $20,000 per Charger OR 100% of Project Cost
Conditions
  • One charger will be awarded per each ZESBI-funded school bus
  • Applicants cannot apply for infrastructure only
  • Maximum infrastructure award of $75,000 per school bus

DCFC Charger

Rebate Type Prescriptive
Rebate Amount Lesser of $75,000 per Charger OR 100% of Project Cost
Conditions
  • One charger will be awarded per each ZESBI-funded school bus
  • Applicants cannot apply for infrastructure only
  • Maximum infrastructure award of $75,000 per school bus

DCFC Bi-directional Charger

Rebate Amount Lesser of $95,000 per Charger OR 100% of Project Cost
Conditions
  • One charger will be awarded per each ZESBI-funded school bus
  • Applicants cannot apply for infrastructure only
  • Maximum infrastructure award of $95,000 per school bus

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include:

  • California public school districts
  • California County Offices of Education (COE)
  • California Joint Powers Authority (JPA)
  • California Public Charter Schools (Not eligible if designated as a “nonclassroom-based charter school” as of FY 21–22)

Additional Notes

  • The first phase of the program was open from May 14, 2024, to September 30, 2024.
  • Stacking is generally allowed as long as the combined funding does not exceed total project cost.
  • Utility programs that reimburse utility service upgrades and integration costs may be utilized but cannot be reimbursed by ZESBI.
  • Multiple sources of CEC funding, such as solicitation or EnergIIZE funding, cannot be applied to one project.
